In my last post, I reviewed Scotch Naturals On the Rocks Top Coat and Base Coat, which are water-based alternatives to the usual top coat and base coat formulations. While a tad expensive, they did live up to their promises of extended wear time of Scotch Naturals water-based nail polish, such as Scotch Naturals Seaboard.

Today I'll be reviewing Scotch Naturals Soy Polish Remover, a very unique nail polish remover that does not contain acetone. Read on to find out more about this moisturising nail polish remover that gives you healthy nails!

First off, can I just say how much I love Scotch Naturals' product packaging? It's understatedly classy, which really speaks to my aesthetic. The minimalist printed label, the elegant frosted glass and silver cap... I was sold on this one the minute I set my eyes on it.

The ingredient label shows that Scotch Naturals Soy Polish Remover does not contain any acetone, which the main ingredient that most nail polish removers contain. Acetone is very drying on the nails and prolonged use will cause brittle and unhealthy nails.

If you thought this soy polish remover can only remove water-based polish - think again. According to Scotch Naturals Singapore, Scotch Naturals Soy Polish Remover has been formulated to remove both water-based and solvent-based nail polish safely and naturally. This was a big draw for me - a non-acetone based polish remover that can remove all kinds of polish - sounds like a dream come true! (do note that those with soy sensitivities should try Scotch Naturals' plant-based polish remover instead, but it only removes water-based polish). Also, there are no soy proteins in the remover so those with soy allergies should not experience adverse reactions.

Interestingly, Scotch Naturals Soy Polish Remover comes with a nozzle spray for application.

To remove nail polish, spray Scotch Naturals Soy Polish Remover onto a cotton pad 2-3 times, then press the cotton pad on your nail and let the polish remover soak in. Do note that you should position the cotton pad very close (more or less touching) the nozzle spray to avoid spraying it into the air/elsewhere and letting this pricey polish remover go to waste. After allowing the polish remover to soak into your nails for a while, press down hard as you remove the cotton pad in a swiping motion to remove nail polish. Repeat as many times as is needed and you should get something that looks like this (I was removing Scotch Naturals Seaboard):

One of the problems I had when working with Scotch Naturals Soy Polish Remover to remove Scotch Naturals Seaboard was that the polish came off in flakes. Although it was to be expected, given the acrylic substance used in Scotch Naturals water-based polish that gives it a rubbery texture, I didn't expect the flakes get all over the place. I had to swipe my nails clean a few times to get them completely free of flakes.

You'll be glad to know that the flakes were the only thing I didn't like about this polish remover. The smell was mild and inoffensive (it basically smelled like... soy - no surprises there) and it felt slightly oily to the touch. After I managed to get all the flakes off, my nails were looked and felt extremely moisturised and shiny. Do remember to wash your hands with soap and water after removing the polish!

Apparently, the best result can be achieved by cutting the cotton pad into smaller squares, spraying the soy polish remover on them and sticking them to the nails to let the remover soak in. I tried Scotch Naturals Soy Polish Remover in removing solvent-based polishes such as Lex Cosmetics (for Mei Mei's Signatures) Love Me More, and it worked just as well as any other acetone-based nail polish remover!

Just a side note: avoid getting any of the soy polish remover onto the label of the bottle, or it will erode and look quite awful, as shown by the picture below.

Unfortunately, that was the reason why my bottle of Scotch Naturals Soy Polish Remover looked so worn down in the first picture. My heart almost broke when it happened, but what's on the inside is more important, right?

Scotch Naturals Soy Polish Remover gets a thumbs up from me for everything... except the price. At S$19.90 for a 2oz (about 60ml) bottle, it's a splurge compared to most other acetone-based nail polish removers. Of course, if you want to ensure the health of your nails, you would be willing to spend more on a quality nail polish remover. In that case, Scotch Naturals Soy Polish Remover is definitely for you. Personally, I loved the fact that I'm pampering my nails even as I remove my nail polish, and the packaging of this polish remover is so classy. Looks like I'm pretty sold on this product - if I can spare the cash!

P.S. Just a heads up - Scotch Naturals Singapore is having a 25% off Scotch Naturals nail polish soon. Check out the Scotch Naturals Singapore Facebook page for updates on when the sale is starting!
